Pardon our dust! We're updating some things around here. We'll be all back to normal shortly.
It’s designed for those who may never ask for help: people who were left behind by early schooling, who carry fear or frustration around reading, or who simply want to build confidence without being treated like a case or a project.
With gentle, AI-supported guidance, the app offers:
– A choice of compassionate voices
– A pace set by the learner, not the system
– Affirming, non-performative reading and writing practice
– Evidence-based methods, tailored in real time to the learner’s needs
– Built on structured literacy principles, including phonics, repetition, and contextual learning, delivered with attunement, not pressure.
There are no timers. No gamification. No scoreboards.
Just light, language, and room to grow.
Did you know?
An estimated 59 million U.S. adults have low literacy skills, but most systems only see the ones who speak up.
We hold that number gently.
Many people living with reading difficulty are never counted. They aren’t in libraries. They aren’t in test groups. But they’re out there, and we’re building Lantern Library to reach them, not just the data.
Most literacy tools reach those already searching for help.
But many who need the Lantern Library the most aren’t looking, or can’t.
They may live in rural counties where broadband is scarce.
They may work long hours in silence about their struggle.
They may fear shame, surveillance, or simply not believe help was ever meant for them.
We don’t believe it’s enough to build a tool and wait.
We believe in reaching quietly, through trust.
That’s why the Lantern Library will grow alongside a Community Trust Network
a distributed, human-first outreach model inspired by the simple wisdom of neighbors helping neighbors.
– Nurses and receptionists in rural clinics
– Food pantry volunteers and shelter staff
– Faith leaders, barbers, postal workers. those who see without demanding
These trusted nodes will help introduce the app gently and privately to those who might never download it otherwise.
And for those without a device, we’ll offer guidance on how to receive one, without shame, through existing government programs like Lifeline or ACP.
This isn’t about distribution.
It’s about invitation, the kind that dignifies, not diagnoses.
The Lantern Library is currently in its early stages of development.
We’re building it with care, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to those it’s meant to serve.
To bring this vision to life, we’re seeking:
– Funding partners to support development, testing, and outreach
– Ethical technologists with experience in literacy, accessibility, or human-centered design
– Community collaborators who know where the quiet needs are, and how to reach them
– Policy or nonprofit allies who can help us expand access and device availability
If you’re moved by this work, and would like to support, advise, or walk with us, we’d love to hear from you.
This isn’t just an app. It’s a light.
And lights are meant to be shared.
Thank you for holding space for this light.
